Book review: That's Not My Name
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
That's Not My Name is a YA thriller that follows the POV of two main characters; a 17 year old girl named Mary and a 17 year old boy named drew.
The book starts off with Mary waking up, hurt, beat up and almost broken in a ditch on the side of the road. She drags herself out and begins to stumble down the road. As she is making her way, a small town cop sees here, picks her up and takes her back to the station in an attempt to help her find her way home. Unfortunately, Mary has no memory whatsoever, doesn't even remember her name. It isn't until a man claiming to be her father, Wayne Boone, shows up at the station just as the officer was preparing to sift through missing persons. He presents the necessary paperwork and identification after which Mary is released into his custody. But she can't shake a strange feeling she has.
Drew is from another town, depressed and stressed, he is currently being blamed for the disappearance and possible death of his girlfriend, Lola. The cops are against him, Lola's best friend is against, hell the whole town is against him. It's been 5 weeks and he feels like he's the only person who has any hope of finding her alive. But when a small shred of evidence finds it's way to him, he can't help but look into it and hold on to the hope everyone else seems to have lost.
Meanwhile, Mary is trying her hardest to remember the life Wayne says they once had together but everything just feels wrong. The trauma of her accident is causing more anxiety than she can handle. All she wants to do is sit and enjoy the things she can enjoy for herself. But even that is proving difficult.
Let me tell you this book. This book had me on the edge of my seat almost the entire time. Without giving any spoilers...
The story was amazing. The POVs were well written and nicely separated. The flowed amazingly alongside each other and didn't loose me with ever change.
The characters were so well written and surprisingly likeable in such a short amount of time. I found myself laughing alongside them, feeling their pain and eye rolling their silly teenage ways.
Now the twist.
I did not see it coming.
At all.
But looking back at the story and how things were written; how the characters were established, I definitely can see how I missed the hints.
I won this Arc as a good reads giveaway prize. It's set to release on January 2nd 2024. But Amazon has it listed for December 26th.
