Syren's Shelf: My Top reads of 2023

Image
2023 was a big year for me reading wise. It was my first year living away from the city, living away from my dad. And even though I homeschool, clean and do other housewife-ish work, I still found my self with way more time than I ever had.  So I decided around my birthday in early March that I would get back into reading. I had recently bought The Unfavorable by Sam Risdon about a month before, and after all the chaos that is tax season ( mew house, new furniture 😊🤣) I decided to finally go at it.  And after that the flood gates were opened.  Of course, I read some typical picks, A good girls Guide to Murder, ACOTAR ( both of which I still have to finish the last book of the series), Fourth wing. Others are sitting on my Amazon list patiently waiting for me to get to them. But I've also taken some chances on some lesser known and new authors. Just to be clear, before joining booktok, it was very rare of me to pick up a book written by an indie author, simply beca...

Book Review: Hallowed games by C.N Crawford

Image
Vampires, witches, death, romance. In a world where witches exist but are captured, tortured and killed, Hallowed games follows the POV of a witch with a deadly power as she is forced to partake in trials held by a religious order in an effort to save her life. When the Raven Lord himself seems to take a fancy to her, she learns some dangerous secrets, about him, and others.  This was my first ever ARC off of book sirens.  And honestly there is a lot I can say about it ( but I hate giving spoilers 😜), but I want to start with what you can see. This beautiful cover! I know they tell you not to judge a book by it's cover, but is it not the cover that catches our eyes in the first place?  Well, this cover definitely caught my eye. Among all the fantasy romance books I was recommended by the site, this is the one that had stood out the most. So naturally when I got the ok to read it, I jumped right in.  Immediately, did not know what the hell was going on, and us...

Calling all ARC readers

Image
In today's day and age, becoming an author is a little easier then it used to be. Yes of course it still takes time money and effort. But with the world of self-publishing available, there are a lot more writers trying there hand at making their work come to life. when I first came on to this scene, it was a little hard to find ARCs and find out how to sign up for them.  So I've created "calling all ARC readers". This will be a post on my blog, posted at least once a month, highlighting some different authors, their soon to be published or newly published books while also providing a way to sign up for these ARCS. This week I have this wonderful 3 authors who have reached out to me hoping to find some readers for their next projects.  P. L. Matthews In the concrete jungles of Sydney, the author leads a double life as a project director, deftly wrangling office cats amidst the corporate chaos. When not catching waves like a pro surfer (or at lea...

Let's Talk ARC's : some basic need to know about advanced Reader copies

Image
(This is an example picture. This is not a call for ARC readers)     So if you've been part of the book community, you are probably very familiar with what an ARC is. For those of your just joining the community, an ARC is an advanced Reader copy giving out to readers, usually few weeks before release, in exchange for an early review.  At least that is what you are supposed to do.  And that's what we're here to talk about today. Let's start with the basics: I've already covered what an ARC basically is. It's an advanced copy of a book. How Do you get an ARC?  You will see a lot of authors, especially indie authors, on social media looking for ARC readers. There are also several sites that help link authors to readers, like the site I found, BookSirens. You should be aware however that sites like these may have deadlines in which you have to submit a review to them. BookSirens gives you 30 days to read and review. (...

Book review: That's Not My Name

Image
That's Not My Name By Megan Lally Rating: 4 out of 5 stars That's Not My Name is a YA thriller that follows the POV of two main characters; a 17 year old girl named Mary and a 17 year old boy named drew.  The book starts off with Mary waking up, hurt, beat up and almost broken in a ditch on the side of the road. She drags herself out and begins to stumble down the road. As she is making her way, a small town cop sees here, picks her up and takes her back to the station in an attempt to help her find her way home. Unfortunately, Mary has no memory whatsoever, doesn't even remember her name. It isn't until a man claiming to be her father, Wayne Boone, shows up at the station just as the officer was preparing to sift through missing persons. He presents the necessary paperwork and identification after which Mary is released into his custody. But she can't shake a strange feeling she has.  Drew is from another town, depressed and stressed, he is currently be...

Back in 2022, My family and I made quiet a big move and left NYC to join my brother in a small town way upstate. As I am sure some of you could guess, it was a big change to go from city living, too town living. And I will admit at first, it was a bit of a struggle for me, having all this time on my hands to do the things I had always wanted to do but now I didn't know what to do. I had already joined tiktok back in 2020, like so many of us did back when there was very little to do (ugh covid). But it wasn't until around the summer of 2023 that I actually discovered booktok and jumped back into reading. And since then, let me tell you, so many wonderful things have happened. I've joined a ton of book groups, made some awesome friends, joined booktok where I now have almost 1000 pe...
